Why Project Management and Why This Blog?

If you were to look at my resume right now, some might think I’m a marketing guy that happens to have a project management gig. Yes, I do have a lot of marketing and communications experience, but the reality is that I’m a project manager and have excelled while managing marketing and communications projects my entire career.

A Project Manager Through and Through

I am a project manager through and through. Even in my jobs in Washington, D.C., where I worked for large marketing and public relations firms, I found myself managing major website development projects for the Owens Corning, the Diesel Technology Forum, the Corn Farmers Coalition and Consumers United for Rail Equity. I planned many press and influencer briefings, including one for the billion-dollar company Interface and a standing-room-only briefing in the U.S. Capitol Building for the Corn Farmers Coalition. I project managed an influencer outreach project on behalf of the Tic Tac brand. The list goes on and on.

My supervisors constantly relied on my intense attention to detail and my ability to work well with a wide range of personalities to ensure these projects were successfully executed.

Discovering My Passion

The funny thing is that it wasn’t until the last couple of years that I figured out “what I want to do when I grow up!” And you might laugh, but it true. I have skill sets that could take me in a lot of different directions – public relations, marketing, public affairs AND project management – to name a few.

It has taken me a long time to realize that I genuinely LOVE project management. I realized it was the project management component of my jobs that has kept me going day in and day out. I can tell you, it certainly wasn’t media outreach or writing, although I can do both of them.

It is so exhilarating to align my passion with what I do for a living and to have a plan moving forward.
